Bristol City Council


The client Bristol City Council were looking to re-locate their Central Library archival records over two sites, one which was the basement at the Central library itself and the other was a former bonded warehouse located nearby. The requirement was to provide as much shelving and storage as could physically fit into the given two areas.


After carrying out extensive site surveys and storage audits, Frem’s design team had a real challenge on their hands. Having to accommodate low ceilings, services in the ceilings and a myriad of pillars, a lot of imagination was required. The result was a design that encompassed over five and a half miles of shelving, comfortably addressing the client’s storage requirements. Using standard products wherever possible, a cost effective solution was presented to the client. When faced with the additional requirement of an extra depth reinforced shelf to house a rare newspaper collection, Frem’s bespoke production facility came to the fore, emphasising the flexibility within the group. Frem Group was pleased to complete the project ahead of schedule, with zero snagging.
